Heriberto Calderon receives prestigious game design scholarship

2017 Sep 28

Becker College student Heriberto Calderon has been awarded an Entertainment Software Association (ESA) Foundation scholarship for the next generation of female and minority video game innovators.

Calderon, a fourth year video game design major, was one of only 15 college students from across the country chosen for the 2017-2018 award. He joins a growing list of distinguished ESA Foundation scholars from Becker's nationally recognized video game program.

"I was honored to receive the scholarship," said Calderon, who aspires to work at a top video game company. "It's helping me achieve my dreams and my goals in the future." The Marlborough, Mass., native, whose love of art began as a young boy drawing on paper, says he greatly enjoys seeing his art come to life through animation and is excited to continue his education at Becker.

"This year's class of ESA Foundation scholars brings an innovative spirit and passion to the video game industry that will be felt for years to come," said Anastasia Staten, executive director of the ESA Foundation. "[W]e are proud to provide this year's scholars with the tools they need to make a positive impact in the video game industry."

The ESA Foundation scholarship was established to assist women and minority undergraduates pursuing degrees and careers in the highly competitive world of Computer & Video Game Arts, and is awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence. Past Becker award recipients are: Yuka Ninohira (2014-2015), Brandon Cimino (2013-2014), and Rachel Hosegood (2011-2012).
